I am a person who cringes when I see a processed protein bar with whey protein isolates, artificial sweeteners, and other fake ingredients, all to boast a sexy looking macronutrient count on the label. It doesn’t impress me when I see the 20g of protein or 0 grams of sugar if I flip over the package and I’m not seeing real food.

Sure a bar can be “keto-friendly” with zero sugar but it’s not the whole-body-nourishing sustainable type of eating that’s going to ultimately support the body.

First off, I tell my clients bars should be for emergency purposes only. Ie you’re stuck in traffic, ran late at work, or need something to stop a melting down hungry child in a grocery store (totally been there). So yes, we have plenty of bars in our pantry but the criteria is they all must be made with real ingredients

I was introduced to the Kion bars earlier this year and quickly had to try some. Kion lists their ingredients with benefits on their site seen here. Perfect for my food-as-medicine tribe and quite delicious!

Ingredients

  • Cocoa Nibs: Packed with fiber, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants, cocoa nibs are a nutrient-dense superfood that have a rich dark-chocolatey flavor.

  • Coconut Flakes: Coconut flakes are an ideal source of natural Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs), providing clean-burning, stable energy.

  • Almonds: Loaded with protein, healthy monounsaturated fat, fiber and antioxidants, Almonds support performance and satiety while adding a crunchy texture.

  • Organic Honey: Nature’s original sweetener! Kion Bar has just enough to aid athletic performance and add a touch of honey-sweet goodness.

  • Grass-fed Gelatin: A grass-fed protein superfood that is an absolute staple in traditional and ancestral foods.

  • Organic White Chia Seeds: Chia seeds are one of the highest antioxidant foods in existence, and they are high in calcium, phosphorus, and zinc.

  • Organic Sesame Seeds: Besides providing minerals like copper and manganese, sesame add the perfect crunchy, nutty texture.

  • Kaniwa (Baby Quinoa): Kaniwa, like Quinoa, is a naturally gluten-free source of B vitamins and essential minerals, but packed with even more flavonoids like Quercetin.

  • Organic Rice & Pea Protein: Because they are naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, rice and pea protein are an ideal gut-friendly protein source.

  • Cocoa Butter: A healthy fat source that adds a perfect, buttery taste.

  • Sea Salt: An excellent electrolyte source. And with at least 60 trace minerals, sea salt is a potent way to give your body its minerals, especially as these have become harder to obtain due to soil depletion.

And it doesn’t hurt that the company is owned by Ben Greenfield who’s work I’ve been following for years since I lived in Los Angeles. He is where functional medicine and sports nutrition meet. He’s also kind of a male witch with all his crazy concoctions and biohacking ideas (many of which I’ve tested myself). Nice work, Ben.

I also have Kion coffee as well as their amino acid powder. Pop on over to the site to see what grabs you.
